Shadow teacher qualifications in the UAE

By ShadowTeacher Team · Updated 24 September 2026

There is no single licence for shadow teachers in the UAE. The role is not a registered teaching post, so what counts is a mix of relevant education, training in the child's specific needs, verified identity and police clearance, and experience in a classroom. Schools set their own minimum requirements, and those requirements are what you should hire against. This guide lists what to look for, what to verify, and what a profile on this platform has already been checked for. If you would rather start from the candidates, every verified teacher here has had documents reviewed before going live.

Why there is no single licence

Teachers in UAE private schools are licensed through the school's regulator. Shadow teachers hired by families are not school employees and fall outside that licensing. Schools therefore vet each shadow teacher themselves, against their own safeguarding and staffing policies, before adding them to the approved-staff list. That is why the same candidate can be accepted by one school and asked for more documents by another.

Education that counts

A bachelor's degree in education, special education, psychology, speech and language, occupational therapy or a related field is the usual baseline. A diploma or postgraduate certificate in special educational needs, inclusive education or applied behaviour analysis adds weight. For children with autism, ABA training and the registered behaviour technician credential are widely valued by UAE schools and centres. For ADHD and learning difficulties, training in behaviour support and specific learning interventions matters more than the degree subject.

A teaching qualification is a bonus rather than a requirement. Some excellent shadow teachers are qualified teachers who prefer one-to-one work; others come from psychology or therapy backgrounds.

Checks every school expects

Valid Emirates ID or passport with residence status, attested qualification certificates, a police clearance certificate, and often a medical fitness certificate. Many schools also ask for a child-protection or safeguarding training certificate and proof of first-aid training. If the candidate is on a family visa, schools generally still require the police clearance and may ask for a no-objection letter from the sponsor. Confirm the exact list with your school before you shortlist.

Ask to see originals or certified copies rather than photographs, and check that the name on every document matches the Emirates ID exactly. A mismatch is often innocent, for example a middle name dropped on a certificate, but it will stall the school's approval until it is explained, so it is better to find it at interview than two weeks later.

Experience that matters

Look for experience with the same age group and, where possible, the same needs profile as your child. Two years in a mainstream classroom with a child on the autism spectrum is worth more than five years in a special school for a child who is now joining a mainstream class. Ask for references from a school, not only from a family, and speak to them.

Our guide on how to interview a shadow teacher gives the questions that reveal whether the experience is real.

What ShadowTeacher verifies

Before a profile is approved on this platform, the teacher uploads education certificates, a CV, Emirates ID and police clearance, and our team reviews them. Profiles that fail the check do not go live. Verification is not a guarantee of fit, and it does not replace the school's own process, but it means the people you message have already cleared the first bar.

When you compare candidates, the cost page shows how the brackets teachers ask for relate to experience and specialty, so a higher rate can be read against a stronger background.

Red flags

Certificates that cannot be attested. Reluctance to provide a police clearance. No school reference. A promise to fix behaviour in weeks. Refusal to share a written weekly note with you or the school. None of these is always disqualifying, but each is worth a direct question.

Frequently asked questions

Does a shadow teacher need a teaching licence in the UAE?

+

No. The role sits outside teacher licensing. Schools vet shadow teachers against their own policies instead.

Is ABA or RBT training required?

+

Not universally. It is widely expected for children with an autism diagnosis in ABA-led programmes, and less relevant for a child whose main need is academic access.

What documents will the school ask for?

+

Typically Emirates ID, attested certificates, police clearance, a medical fitness certificate, and safeguarding or first-aid training. Ask your school for its exact list.
